Windows 7 hits the streets in nine months... and?

Computers & GadgetsHere's a small section from the BBC's story:
---
Mr Curran said that the Microsoft Windows team had been poring over every aspect of the operating system to make improvements.

"We were able to shave 400 milliseconds off the shutdown time by slightly trimming the WAV file shutdown music."
---
Didn't anyone at Microsoft think of making the shutdown sound play WHILE the computer is doing something else? I mean, is the shutdown sound holding up the shutdown process? WHY?! Does the computer shutdown quicker if you turn the sound off?

No one is going to care about saving 0.4 seconds during shutdown. They care about bugs in the OS. They care about security issues. They care about non-standard-compliant standards in the web browser. They care about usability. They care about being able to do things with their computer without having popups appear in the lower-right of their screen every time anything happens.

0.4 seconds off shutdown is not a win in any sense of the word.

Prayer works!!! (No, really...)

ReligionSo, there's a pig flu outbreak in Mexico, and people are sitting in Mexico City cathedral praying - presumably that they won't be killed by it. As you can see in the photo there are people wearing surgical masks in there. Surely, if prayer were effective, and these people really, truly believed it, they wouldn't need to wear a surgical mask?

I think these people cannot truly believe that their religion will protect or save them. It's like the Pope being driven around in the Pope-Mobile whilst protected behind bullet-proof glass...

Prime Minister Gordon Brown should resign - and here's how YOU can help!

NewsThere's a new petition here that asks Prime Minister Gordon Brown to resign. Nothing special, just requests that he resign. I suggest you all sign it. I doubt I need to force you into signing such an obvious petition; the state of the economy should be more than enough evidence that this dickwad has ruined our country.

Open letter to the Pope...

ReligionHere's an open letter to the Pope, Old el Pope-o, the Dungeon Master, Keeper of the Hat of Infallibility:

Dear 'The Pope',

Following your recent comments on how condoms cause AIDS, I thought I would ask you a few questions, and provide you with a few comments, if that's okay?

You think that because condoms can prevent pregnancies and sexually-transmitted infections (STIs) it's naturally going to make people have more sex, and to be more 'free' with their sex. Well, I see where you're coming from, but I have to disagree. Yes, people might have more sex but the sex becomes much much safer. If you don't use a condom at all, you are more likely to contract HIV or any other STI than if you used a condom, even given that you might have sex more often. Are people still having sex, despite messages of abstainance? Yes, they are. Will anything you say end that? No. If it could, people would have abstained from sex centuries ago when a now long-dead Pope said it before.

I think you really should have stated that abstainance, death or never being born are the only ways to guard against AIDS. Blankly stating that condoms cause AIDS is a really ridiculous position to be in given the scientific information available that conclusively disproves your assertion.

Also, to make such a statement is to cause great suffering in countries where education is limited. Sub-Saharan Africa is currently in the grip of an AIDS epidemic. Do you think that abstainance has worked there? No, clearly not. If you tell Africans that condoms can *prevent* AIDS, then perhaps we'll start to see a decline in new AIDS cases? If you stand there saying this kind of rubbish, people will listen to you. You tell them condoms are evil and against 'God', and they'll believe you; and unfortunately, people will still die of AIDS.

Face it, 'The Pope', your comments were ill-informed, and nonsense. You practically committed genocide by spreading your scientifically-bereft statement.

Also, I'd like to point out that you are meant to be infallibale, but in this case you clearly aren't. Can I suggest you wear a different hat when you're being fallible so we all know whether to listen to you or not? You can call it the 'Hat of Fallibility'. In 50 years, it can become official Catholic doctrine, much like the Church did with the Assumption of Mary. You could even claim that 'god' created it. Gullible people will believe anything you say.

I can recommend a few hats:
- A large cone-shaped one with a D on it, for 'Dunce', of course.
- One of those Rastafarian woollen things; very colourful, and you don't need to grow dreadlocks to wear one, just stuff bags of money in there. Yes, it'll take some cash away from painting your toilet seat with real gold, and you won't be able to pay off so many adults scarred for life by the child molestation they suffered at the hands of your underlings, but hey, we all have to sacrifice a little, don't we?

PS: I am clearly not a Catholic; I'm just amazed at your stupidity.

B.Liar says Pope should go easy on the gays...

ReligionAs if that old b*stard will ever take notice of the ex-Prime Minister who changes his faith on a whim...
From Daily Mail:
The Pope is out of step with ordinary Catholics because of his 'entrenched attitude' to homosexuality, Tony Blair has declared. The former Prime Minister said the Vatican was far less tolerant on gay rights and was resisting adapting to modern life.

Mr Blair, who converted to Catholicism after leaving office, suggested it was too afraid to change its trenchant views because it could lead to a complete overhaul of the faith. He also controversially implied that the Catholic Church should reform itself in a similar way to how he reshaped the Labour Party in the 90s.

His public disagreement with the Pope on homosexuality, published today in gay magazine Attitude, is likely to irritate the Vatican. It still officially describes homosexuals as 'intrinsically disordered' and brands gay sex a sin.

Last year, Pope Benedict XVI sparked outrage by suggesting homosexuality was as big a threat to humans as the destruction of the rainforests. He said it was 'a more or less strong tendency towards an intrinsic moral evil'.

Mr Blair has become a high-profile unofficial ambassador for the Catholic faith since he converted in 2007 shortly after stepping down. During his time in Downing Street, he was famously told not to 'do God' because it would put off voters but has spoken out on faith increasingly since his departure. Asked if he agreed with the Pope's attitude to homosexuality, he told Attitude: 'There is a huge generational difference here. There's probably that same fear amongst religious leaders that if you concede ground on [homosexuality], because attitudes and thinking evolve over time, where does that end? You'd start having to rethink many, many things. If you went and asked the congregation, I think you'd find that their faith is not to be found in those types of entrenched attitudes.'

He added: 'Organised religions face the same dilemma as political parties when faced with changed circumstances. You can either A: Hold on to your core vote, basically, you know, say "look, let's not break out because if we break out we might lose what we've got, and at least we've got what we've got so let's keep it". Or B: You say "let's accept that the world is changing, and let us work out how we can lead that change and actually reach out".'

Mr Blair had been widely expected to convert to Catholicism when he left Downing Street - his wife Cherie is a Catholic and their children were brought up in the faith. However, his record as Prime Minister sparked questions about how he would easily change faiths and be welcomed by the Church.

Some Catholics condemned his support for causes apparently inconsistent with Catholic doctrine but senior figures insisted the Pope's welcome was the final word. Sources at the time said the former PM would not have to account for his actions and beliefs in the past. During his tenure, he presided over crucial changes in law on equal rights including civil partnership and lowering the age of consent to the same as heterosexuals. He also has a generally liberal view on abortion and allowed embryo research.

In the past, Pope Benedict has branded abortion the 'gravest injustice' and refuses to relax the Vatican's vehement opposition to the procedure. Last year, the Vatican supported the excommunication of a mother and four doctors who performed an abortion on a nine-year-old girl who was raped by her stepfather.

Mecca mosques 'wrongly aligned'

ReligionHA HA HA
From BBC News:
Some 200 mosques in Islam's holiest city, Mecca, point the wrong way for prayers, reports from Saudi Arabia say.

All mosques have a niche showing the direction of the most sacred Islamic site, the Kaaba, an ancient cube-like building in Mecca's Grand Mosque. But people looking down from recently built high-rises in Mecca found the niches in many older mosques were not pointing directly towards the Kaaba.

Some worshippers are said to be anxious about the validity of their prayers.

There have been suggestions that laser beams could be used to make an exact measurement.

Tawfik al-Sudairy, Islamic affairs ministry deputy secretary, downplayed the problem in remarks quoted by the pan-Arab newspaper al-Hayat. "There are no major errors but corrections have been made for some old mosques, thanks to modern techniques," he said. "In any case, it does not affect the prayers."
---

Right, so every Muslim has to face the Kabah for prayers. This is something that they do all the time. This is something they have been told to do as part of their religion. This is a fundamental part of Islam. It is one of the five tenets of Islam. It is important. If it weren't, why would they make such a fuss about it all the time?

So, anyway... This guy says "it does not affect the prayers". So, it was perfectly okay to pray in the wrong direction for all those years? So why is it a fundamental part of Islam?!

Notice how it is modern techniques and laser technology that helps to correct this error, and not 'Allah', or prayer, or belief, or faith, or piety. It is modern technology - something Muslims would have us destroy and cease the invention of because of Islam and their beliefs. Hypocrites much?

No, it is NOT a personal matter!

NewsBrown says the Wacky Jacqui prono movie incident is a 'personal matter'
From BBC News:
The row engulfing Home Secretary Jacqui Smith over an expenses claim for adult films, is a 'personal matter', Gordon Brown has said.

The Prime Minister was speaking at a joint press conference with Australia's PM, Kevin Rudd, ahead of the G20 meeting.
---

No, it is NOT a personal matter. It is a very public matter because she submitted an expenses claim that was to be paid by people like me, the UK taxpayer.

When are we going to expel this ludicrous government? When will MPs' expenses be properly controlled? Why do I have to pay for an MP's kitchen or flat-screen TV, when if I want one myself *I* have to pay for it? My employer certainly doesn't contribute.

This f**king gravy train has to stop. Brown, step down as Prime Minister; it is clear you are nothing but a fool. You don't know how the country feels about you and your idiotic, robbing government. Get lost, you useless turd.

The Pope's parents should have abstained from sex

ReligionThen we wouldn't be left with this dickhead in charge of a billion people...

Pope 'distorting condom science'
From BBC News:
One of the world's most prestigious medical journals, the Lancet, has accused Pope Benedict XVI of distorting science in his remarks on condom use.

It said the Pope's recent comments that condoms exacerbated the problem of HIV/Aids were wildly inaccurate and could have devastating consequences.

The Pope had said the "cruel epidemic" should be tackled through abstinence and fidelity rather than condom use.
---

Oh, if only your parents had abstained from sex... perhaps a billion people would be spared your deceit and idiocy.
